Asthmatic pupils are to be given the right of access to an inhaler at school, stopping teachers locking away their medicines in cupboards or desks.
The right of access to potentially life-saving medication is one of five proposed standards laid down in the Children’s Charter, announced by John Bowis, the health minister, this week.
The draft charter, which has been published to allow interested parties to make their comments, aims to take the fear out of being in hospital. It says children should have separate treatment areas.
The charter also includes the right of parents to hold their children’s health records and says that parents should be given prompt information about the named health visitor, school nurse and children’s nurse, including how to contact them.
