The Scottish Schools Athletic Association has been hit by another fixture clash with the Scottish Athletics Federation.

Due to the 2002 Commonwealth Games, which will take place in Manchester on July 26-August 4, the Scottish National Athletics Championships have been moved forward to June 8 to allow selection for the XVII Games. That date is when the SSAA was due to host the Scottish Schools’ Pentathlon and Relay Championships.

“It’s unfortunate and we’ll need to find an alternative date as we will not be able to get enough officials to allow our event to go ahead,” explains Linda Trotter, the SSAA secretary. It is likely the schools’ event will now go ahead on June 1.

Last term, the relay and pentathlon championships clashed with the SAF Under-20 Championships, forcing athletes to make a choice between the two.

Meanwhile, the SSAA has released dates for some of its other major events for the new season.

December 8: Pentathlon International (Kelvin Hall, Glasgow) January 31, 2002: Indoor Track and Field Championships (Kelvin Hall) March 9: Secondary Schools’ Cross-Country (Irvine) April 27: Primary Schools’ Cross-Country (Kirkcaldy).
