Dunfermline’s Queen Anne High pupil Gemma Nicol was Scotland’s top performer at the World Schools’ Gymnasiade in Caen, France, which 39 countries attended.

Gemma won silver in the 400m race and guided Scotland to bronze in the 4 x 100m x 200m x 300m x 400m relay with a storming final leg run, having taken over the baton in eighth place.

The other members of the quartet were Queen Anne High schoolmates Lauren Candlish and Kirsteen McDiarmid plus Nicola Gossman of Jordanhill.

This was the first time Scotland had participated in the event and it was made possible through funding from a private company, Gordon Woodlands.

The other members of the Scottish squad were: girls: J Erskine (Lochgelly HS), P Paterson (Preston Lodge HS), A Shearer (Gordon Schools) and L Chalmers (Elgin HS); boys: G Oudney (Menzieshill HS) and D Malin (St Joseph’s College).

Entries for the Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships which begin at Grangemouth today are greater than last year with 219 schools signing up.
