The Scottish Schools’ Pentathlon and Relay Championships at Grangemouth earlier this month featured a triathlon race for S1 pupils for the first time. The Scottish Schools’ Athletic Association introduced the race to try to encourage more interest in multi-events, but only 17 schools put forward athletes.

The championships had a healthy entry of more than 700 athletes but the relay races were still the preserve of the private schools, with only six state schools entering them.
