ATL re-elects Peter Smith;In brief

THE third largest teaching union has re-elected its general secretary - but only a quarter of members bothered to vote.

Peter Smith won another five-year term heading the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, after gaining 21,794 votes from the 29,034 ballot papers returned (75 per cent). The turnout represents only 26 per cent of the 111,984 ballot papers distributed.

Gill Sage, who forced what was the first election in the union's history, received 7,202 votes. A former further education lecturer, she previously worked in the union's legal department but is now a partner in a law firm.

The union holds its annual assembly at the end of the month in Harrogate.
