What is happening to education? Your editorial (20 January) complains about teacher unions not agreeing to the pensions offer. The point is, we don’t know if our present pensions are affordable as the government refuses to release the figures, so how can we agree to any deal?

Then an independent school sponsoring an “inadequate” academy states: “As soon as the trust was aware of issues as highlighted by Ofsted...it took action” (“Academy sponsored by private chain is ‘inadequate’”). If they were doing their job properly, they should have known of the problems beforehand.

Further on, David Cameron doesn’t want the word “satisfactory”, even though to be “good” a school must “broadly be at or above national averages” (”‘Demoralising’ inspection reform brews dissatisfaction”). This could see a massive increase in the number of schools in special measures within three years.

I am then berated for wishing to work with my pupils, allow them to experiment and then write up their findings by hand (“The digital age is now, so embrace it”). In my experience, the idea that “it is possible and affordable for every pupil to have their own device by working in partnership with parents” is ludicrous.
