EVEN the most ardent supporters of the five-term year will have noticed how difficult it is for children to learn in the weather we have been experiencing lately.

The majority, if not all, of our European and American counterparts had the good sense to begin their summer breaks a month or so ago (many to return later than us as well), yet we still battle on.

Eight-week terms, however cleverly scheduled, would result in an increase in schooling during this period. It is difficult to understand how this would lead to an increase in school effectiveness.
