Ned Burke, one of the country’s longest serving school governors, has been honoured by Liverpool city council. Mr Burke, aged 80, was appointed manager of All Saints elementary school in 1941.

He has appointed four head teachers and five deputies and has served as a governor for other schools in the city. Mr Burke said: “I think it’s being around so many young people that helps keep me youthful and active.”
