The “heidbummer” gave the Penicuik event a polished performance, even sailing through the fine tunes of a mobile phone ringing out through her speech.

We can say with certainty it was not one of those mobiles nicked from her handbag at her Renfrewshire home the other Sunday.

The owner of the offending mobile just happened to be a senior education official in her own constituency whose embarrassed look matched the vividness of the minister’s jacket.

“Pollocks,” the official seemed to say, groping in her handbag.
