NEW-BORN infants are to be screened for hearing problems using new technology that sends sound messages into the baby’s ear and then measures the level of sound returned.

James Strachan, chief exective of the Royal National Institute for the Deaf, said early diagnosis would ensure that new technology, such as high-powered digital hearing aids, could be used to transform babies’ lives.
