Bac takes away the fine detail

Regarding the current A-level vs Bac furore (TES, July 25), I have seen little about why changes should be made.

I remember my relief when commencing A-levels at no longer being forced to study other subjects. I was grateful to be able to study those subjects I liked in challenging detail.

At a time when university undergraduates are bemoaned for having sparse knowledge of history, why the rush to dilute subject knowledge further by imposing a broader range of experience at key stage 5?

At 16 most students know whether they enjoy literature or mathematics. By patronisingly denying this, the powers that be run the real risk of alienating these more academic students.
