Back to basics for latest honours list

https://www.tes.com/magazine/archive/back-basics-latest-honours-list
Vast numbers of those receiving honours in the Queen’s birthday list this year may have been nominated by friends, colleagues, and admirers - but the basics remain the same.

Primary heads and crossing patrol staff almost invariably get the Member of the British Empire medal, while secondary heads pocket the more upmarket Order of the British Empire, along with a clutch of retiring civil servants from the Department for Education and Employment. One of the honoured secondary heads this year is John McIntosh, of the London Oratory school, where Labour leader Tony Blair’s eldest son, Euan, is now a pupil.

New Commanders of the British Empire include Geoffrey Parker, chairman of the Teacher Training Agency, John Sutton, the general secretary of the Secondary Heads’ Association, and also Michael McCrum, the former head of Eton. Richard Painter, the businessman appointed to head the Government’s first education association which closed Hackney Downs school, London last year, is awarded an OBE.
