Backing down on behaviour will backfire

Everybody knows that bad behaviour is the biggest obstacle to learning in schools. I’m glad to see that it’s finally been recognised and talked about (“Union’s warning to heads: you must face up to bad behaviour”, 15 April).

I’m an NQT and am totally amazed at what kids get away with, only to be given a “warning” by management.

Pupils need to be more than told that swearing and acting aggressively towards their teacher is wrong - they need a proper sanction or they will keep doing it.
