When Mary Jane Kehily asserts that appraisal is doing little to help committed teachers reach their potential, by highlighting some very dodgy local education authority training as evidence, she is guilty of throwing the baby out with the bathwater (TES, October 21).

Bad training is inexcusable, but to use it as an excuse to dismiss appraisal as just another bureaucratic exercise makes a spurious connection.
