I have asked many colleagues what the General Teaching Council for England (GTC) is for and most believe it exists only to strike off teachers. Now it appears it is not even doing that (“Incompetent staff go free as heads judge GTC ‘pointless’”, February 26).
When it was set up by the Government it was meant to be teaching’s professional body. We assumed that it would exist to represent our views. Instead it seems to be completely out of touch with teachers and the changes they want to their profession.
Surely it is time this organisation was scrapped? As public spending gets tighter we can no longer afford to prop up irrelevant and ineffective organisations.
