At the end of a trial for the school football team, a secondary teacher gave a pep talk on what would be expected of them if they were picked - regular attendance at school, complying with school rules, the usual stuff.

When one of the would-be stars failed to turn up at the next session, the teacher asked the boy’s pal why, to be told (and we paraphrase): “He doesn’t think he could behave well all the time so he might as well chuck it now.”

Who said that self-assessment doesn’t work?
