She may only be 48, but our Deputy Minister for Communities (who?) has a long memory from her teaching days. We speak of Johann Lamont, who shared one of her early experiences during her address to the Learning Connections conference last week (FE Focus, page four).

Launching the latest online resource for adult literacy and marvelling at today’s technology, she recalled the Banda - not Hastings of that ilk, but the copying machine to which teachers of a certain vintage were “permanently attached”, as Lamont put it.

“Those of you here who are very old will know that teachers who were regarded as really skilled and at the forefront of technology in these days were those who could print from a Banda machine in more than one colour,” she said wistfully.
