SATURDAY’S march in Glasgow against war in Iraq would not have been complete without an array of teachers marching under Educational Institute of Scotland banners. It was quite like old times.

But mystery briefly surrounded the union’s national banner which was conspicuous by its absence amid those of local associations such as Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and East Renfrewshire.

No doubt there will be many conspiracy theories. The explanation appeared to be that the banner was sent on its westward journey from the EIS’s Edinburgh headquarters - with mismatched poles.

It couldn’t therefore be unfurled and spent the day ignominiously in a polly bag inside a rucksack carried by veteran leftie and scourge of the leadership, Jock Morris. A delicious irony which probably would not have been appreciated by one of the speakers at the rally - Alana Ross, national EIS president.
