The Education and Employment Secretary, Gillian Shephard, has maintained her return to the language of educational basics with the announcement that grammar, punctuation and spelling are to be given a greater emphasis in the national curriculum tests for 14-year-olds.

“Only if we test these elements rigorously can we ensure that they will be properly covered in the classroom,” she said.
