There’s a particular sweetness to those last rays of sunshine - particularly if you’re enjoying them during half-term in Cyprus when you know that winter is just round the corner at home.

It may be typically overblown brochurese to describe Cyprus as “God’s playground”, as one source does, but maybe when you’ve spent weeks policing a decidedly unheavenly playground, somewhere like Paphos - backed by banana plantations and the foothills of the Western Troodos - is just what you need.

Whitehall Leisure has seven-night breaks for half-term staying at the three-star Paphos Gardens Hotel and Apartments, a short stroll from the harbour area.

The amenities include swimming pools, an ... la carte restaurant, three bars, a regular entertainment programme and a children’s playground. If you need some history, legend has it that along the coast was the birthplace of Aphrodite, and the area’s ancient sites and mosaics caused Unesco to add it to its list of world cultural heritage sites.

The price of pound;382 per person (adults and children) is based on a one-bedroom apartment, departing on October 26 from Gatwick on scheduled flights with GB Airways, including private transfers. For details, tel 020 7340 1030; see www.whitehall-leisure.co.uk.
