Scotland staged a terrific fightback to defeat England 75-56 in the annual under-16 schoolgirls basketball international at Spelthorne College, Surrey.
Down 35-24 at half-time, the Scots stormed back in the second half, sparked by 15-year-old Lyndsay Clarkson from Liberton High School in Edinburgh. Clarkson, who plays senior basketball for Beefeater Kool Kats, scored a remarkable 34 points.
“Lyndsay was exceptional but it was a fine all-round team performance,” team coach Ross Allison from Brechin said.
Gillian Bailey, who unusually for basketball comes from a private school, Mary Erskine, stepped up with her best performance, scoring 16 points.
Scottish team: Gillian Bailey (Mary Erskine), Lyndsay Clarkson (Liberton), Louise Donaldson (St Columba’s, Dunfermline), Julie Fleeting (St Michael’s, Kilwinning), Dayna Froude (Portobello), Louise Haddow, Louise McGoldrick (both Eastbank Academy), Alison Hogg, Leanne Stupart (both St David’s, Dalkeith), Gayle Motion (Gracemount), Michelle Stewart (Liberton).
