THE first so-called numeracy skills test was nothing to do with the testing of numeracy skills. Instead it was a test on the nervous system that was designed to demoralise teachers.

I am a maths PGCE student who has studied A-level maths, obtained a degree in civil engineering management, an extra year studying maths (to prepare me for the PGCE course) and taught secondary math, yet I was still feeling nervous throughout the test and the time leading up to it.

Imagine how other trainees were feeling who have not studied beyond GCSE maths.

Once again the Government has taken a step backwards in raising the standards of teaching by striking off good would-be teachers.
