Despite speculation, the world wars and the Holocaust have remained on the curriculum. In 2005, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority complained about the “Hitlerisation” of history courses, sparking fears that the world wars would be dropped.
But, in the final stages, they were moved to the main text of the document, leading some to suspect ministerial inter-vention - a charge denied by the authority.
More generally, the chronological approach has been replaced by a thematic one, which leaves out specifics such as the Domesday survey. Pressure from ministers has meant that there is a much greater emphasis on the slave trade and the after-effects of colonisation.
