Be grateful for your older staff

Your article on special schools quotes Alan Kemp saying most of his staff are aged 45 to 50 and it is difficult to recruit younger staff (TES, October 1).

I suggest that Alan should be grateful for having experienced staff . It takes a lot to teach in special schools. Younger teachers are at a considerable risk. They lack the firm and detached view gained only through experience and hard slog. Age-mad Britons often forget that people teach because they love the buzz of young people and take pride in harnessing their wildish traits.
