Beer is the key

According to recent research in the Czech Republic, there is no connection between beer-drinking and having a large belly. The findings will be welcomed by Charles Clarke, the Education Secretary, who has recently been quoted as attributing the size of his belly to burgundy rather than beer.

Researchers interviewed 891 men and 1,098 women - all of whom drank no alcohol at all or just beer.

Those who would mock Mr Clarke’s apparent state of denial should take note.

After all, the Czechs are widely regarded as the world’s biggest (or, should I say, most frequent) beer drinkers.

But if the link between beer and stomach size is a myth, then what of Mr Clarke’s suggestion of the existence of such a syndrome as the “burgundy-belly”?

FErret is on the case.
