A headteacher who lost his two-year-old son to meningitis is urging the Government to vaccinate all children against the disease. Scott Fewster, head of Whitehall primary, in Leicester, and his wife Maria, lost their son Lachlan earlier this year. Since then the couple have discovered that virtually all children in America are routinely given a vaccine against the form of meningitis which killed Lachlan. But in the UK the NHS only gives the Prevenar vaccine out when a child is thought to be vulnerable to the disease for reasons such as a weak immune system.
