Selecting books for small children can be daunting, but Simply the Best, by the staff at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education, makes the task much easier. Their choices for readers aged nought to seven includes such favourites as Spot by Eric Hill and Katie Morag by Mairi Hedderwick.

Hundreds of titles are listed, each with a brief review. There is also a Simply the Best for seven to 11-year-olds, which includes picture books such as In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak and tough, chewy reads from the likes of Philip Pullman and Gillian Cross. There are also plenty of suggestions for sports fanatics, and comedy and adventure-lovers, and a wealth of titles on mystery, magic and mythology. Simply the Best: Books for 0 to 7 Years and Simply the Best: Books for 7 to 11 Years cost pound;5.99 each and are published by CLPE, Webber St, London SE1 8QW Tel: 020 7401 33823383 Email: info@clpe.co.uk www.clpe.co.uk
