However barren your back yard or your school playground may look, something will be living or growing there, even if it is only fungal. BBC2 reveals why in The Natural World: The Secret Garden, which uses macrophotography to catch an entire microcosm at work.

What looks like an unprepossessing patch of garden is unveiled as a hotbed of passion among the insects, a breeding ground for snakes, a den for foxes and battleground for belligerent weeds and more gentile flora.

This kind of televisual safari should enliven work on food chains and minibeasts, as well as field studies. It might even provide some ideas for creating your own jungleout there.
