John Mitchell confirms that our spy in the camp at Dundee got it right, and takes the chance to apologise to HMI for forgetting one of his favourite recollections on the night. “When I was in teaching we used to call them Her Majesty’s Expectorant,” he says, “because their main job was getting schools to cough up things that nobody wanted to examine in detail.”

Maybe it’s as well that he forgot to tell it.
