The First Minister repeated the Executive’s belief this week that “there is a clear correlation between a nation’s competitiveness and educational performance”.

Addressing the Institute of Directors in Edinburgh, Jack McConnell agreed that business leaders perceived shortfalls in some skills but also that they wanted school-leavers and graduates to have “attributes of initiative, leadership and an ability to work in a team”. Mr McConnell said that the policy remained to develop “the whole person”.
