Schools have been told by the Minister for Culture that they must encourage “as many young people as possible” to read Scots as part of the Government’s bid to increase the use of the language.

The Scottish Government announced last week that it plans to undertake an audit of Scots language provision to see how its profile and use could be increased. Culture minister Linda Fabiani said: “Scots is part of our identity and our heritage as a nation. We must encourage confidence in the use of Scots in all its forms and create opportunities for it to thrive. Schools have an important contribution to ensure many young people have the opportunity to enjoy works of literature by Scots authors. Our national languages have been suppressed and oppressed over the centuries, but they should be as valued as any other language spoken in the world.”
