School sports facilities should be readily available to the community out of hours, Raymond Robertson, the Education Minister, will tell the new all-purpose local authorities later this month.

The minister, outlining his thoughts to the Scottish Association of Local Sports Councils in Inverness, promised to issue guidelines on closer ties between leisure and recreation services and education. “This is particularly true in relation to the use of sports facilities in schools, and I look to authorities to maximise the opportunities in this area,” Mr Robertson said.

Stirling is already seeking to move control of buildings out of school hours to its community services department. East Lothian wants to link sports clubs with school facilities.
