The Big Plus, the campaign to attract adults with reading and writing difficulties back to learning, depends heavily on adverts in bus shelters which presume that the non-reader can distinguish the Big Plus from the Big Bus he or she is waiting for - and then write down the contact number to phone later.

But competition is evident on the streets of Bearsden where one shelter advertises the Big Plus, while another across the road promotes Dyslexia Scotwest with a much more demanding read.

Those who can’t read are spoilt for choice these days - at least in the leafy suburbs.
