I am reassured by news (FE Focus, September 26) that progress was made on the creation of the Lifelong Learning Skills Council when leading employers and partners met at Windsor Castle.

There is now a clear way forward for the appointment of a shadow board, and for submission of formal expression of interest to the Sector Skills Development Agency. This is very heartening.

Natfhe, the lecturers’ union, supports the establishment of this Sector Skills Council.

There are and will be tensions between the sectors and across the UK. But if this sector skills council is not set up in the proposed timescale, the main losers will be the workforce.
