Bigger grants urged

Delegates at a special conference of the National Union of Students this week voted to keep on campaigning for grants to be increased to 1979 levels in line with inflation. The union president Jim Murphy argued for a more “realistic” strategy accepting that the taxpayer could not afford it. The conference also voted to oppose any moves towards graduates being asked to contribute towards the cost of their education and called for the restoration of social security benefits.
