Anglican and Catholic bishops have welcomed the Government’s reassurance that religious disputes over pupil admissions will be dealt with by David Blunkett, the Education and Employment Secretary. They will not be covered by the Government’s proposed new admissions adjudicator.
“Church schools play a central role in education and we guarantee that this will be safeguarded,” said school standards minister Stephen Byers. “Today we are confirming our further reassurance that the Secretary of State will deal with all objections on religious or denominational criteria.”
