The campaign to entice more teachers from the ethnic communities to consider a life in the classroom stepped up a gear last week with a conference in Glasgow.

One of the speakers, Professor Mono Chakrabarti, is possibly Strathclyde University’s only black professor and certainly the only one in the education faculty.

Having been out of Scotland for some years, he returned and was making some informal enquiries as to whether racism was a force in the land. “Not at all,” he was assured by a denizen from the west.

And how did he reckon that, Chakrabarti wondered. “Well,” came the reply, “you only have to go to Ibrox and listen to the crowd chanting ‘you’d better be a nigger than a Tim’.”

Sectarian, maybe. Racist, never.
