The National Year of Reading may be practically over, but there’s clearly plenty of work yet to be done. The Labour party is advertising a “stunning range of merchandise” designed to mark its centenary. There’s the inevitable T-shirt and mug - plus a tea towel depicting a brave worker embracing the rising sun above the slogan: “Greet the dawn: give Labour it’s chance.”
Out, damned apostrophe. This from the party that gave us the literacy hour, education times three, and expects eight out of 10 11-year-olds to be able to use “its” properly by 2002. No doubt a subliminal warning against complacency in the next 100 years.
