The new directors of education continue to come across the unexpected, as Alan Blackie found to his cost in East Lothian during a visit to a primary on his patch.

An assiduous headteacher had briefed his charges well, but not well enough. Asked what special visitor was about to descend on the school, a lad chirped up: “Please, sir, the dictator.”

We think he must have meant the director, but we could be wrong.
