SCHOOLS have an important part to play in educating the local decision-makers of the future, Education Secretary David Blunkett told a fringe meeting this week.
Groups and individuals will increasingly work alongside Government rather than simply expecting to be passive recipients of services, he said.
Mr Blunkett praised the work of specialis and community schools in working with adults and families and introducing out-of-school activities.
He said the introduction of citizenship was one of the things he was most proud of. New citizenship lessons, which will be compulsory in secondaries from 2002, should increase young people’s involvement in the community, said Mr Blunkett.
