David Blunkett may not be the teachers’ hero, but he plays very well with the old cricketing buffers. This little corner of the establishment has just sacked Richard Hutton, the editor of the Cricketer magazine. His crime? To coin the phrase Blind Man’s Blunkett in an editorial attacking Government plans to weaken the college system of Oxford, Cambridge and Durham and to let in more state school pupils. Mr Hutton believed, rather implausibly, that this would further damage the cause of British cricket.
