We are glad to report that Shetland Islands Council is zealously guarding the public purse, reminding heads that they “have a duty to ensure that resources allocated to you are used appropriately”.

Requests by teachers for leave of absence are no exception. But the latest guidelines reveal there is no killjoy spirit in Lerwick. Among grounds for leave without pay are “fishing boat launching naming ceremony”.
