You cannot keep a good man down. Bob McKay’s retiral to Spain to get away from the pressures of the directorate proved to be short-lived.

The former head man in Perth and Kinross could not resist the call from old associate Ronnie O’Connor, Glasgow’s director, to sort out some of his problems. McKay’s remit is to work as an external adviser, with the advisory service, to introduce improvements in learning and teaching in Glasgow schools.

As he worked in a Glasgow school as recently as 20 years ago, his personal experience of teaching should be invaluable. Co-ordination of his work with O’Connor can take place over their pies and Bovril at half-time at Celtic Park.
