The principal of a Glasgow FE college wrote recently: “The college’s outline PFI business case may receive yet another blow - this time from outer space. Fears that the earth has a thousand to one chance of being hit by a mile-wide asteroid in 30 years’ time have produced uncertainty amongst potential investors in the college’s proposed new buildings.
“The PFI scheme, which could take 20-30 years to pay off, is now at risk as private investors and city finance houses understandably take a shorter term view about their anticipated returns on investments.”
The principal was dissuaded from publishing his unadorned views in the college newsletter. As one cynic asked, who can recall any new school or college building likely to last more than 10 years before major work is necessary?
