PRIMARY 1 pupils at Walker Road school in Aberdeen will have French for 40 minutes every day. In what the city claims is a venture unique in Scotland, Silvie Grigas, a native speaker, will use French to teach drama, music, art and physical education.

Ms Grigas has also started taster classes for the families of hr 28 pupils. Jurgen Thomaneck, Aberdeen’s education convener, said: “I am hopeful that we can serve as a model for Scotland and eventually are on a par again with our European neighbours.”

He added: “I hope that this is only the beginning of much more all-through language teaching in Aberdeen schools.”
