The Scottish Parliament’s “MSPs in School” programme has been re-launched, after reaching out to more than 6,000 pupils at 100 schools in 2006-07.

Bookings for this year’s programme of school visits - which runs from September to June 2008 - are now being taken on a first come, first served basis.

The free programme is designed not only to teach children about the Scottish Parliament, but to give them a chance to meet their MSPs to present their own ideas on the issues that most affect them.

The programme has been running for two years and was set up by Hansard Society Scotland working with the Scottish Parliament’s outreach services, Learning and Teaching Scotland, the Scottish Executive and Electoral Commission.

Schools receive two visits: the first by a member of the Parliament’s outreach services, who visits the school to talk to the children about how the Scottish Parliament works; for the second visit, the local MSPs are invited in to explain their role.
