Ten primary schools in Newham, east London, will each receive books worth Pounds 2,000 under a literacy scheme run by local employer Tate Lyle.

The firm has pledged Pounds 100,000 a year for three years to improve reading standards in schools. The borough was chosen last year for one of the country’s 13 literacy centres.
