Given his buffoon-ish image and reputation as a scandal-magnet, it is hard to imagine who would want to send their children to the Boris Johnson high school.

But the Conservative higher education spokesman has revealed that he gave serious consideration to setting up his own secondary when he struggled to find one for his children. “It would have been fee-paying but the children could have won scholarships,” he told the Express. “I saw it as a way of bringing back old fashioned values.” It is tempting to imagine what might have been on the curriculum - courses on gaffes, perhaps. And no doubt there would be plenty of extra-curricular activities.

Unfortunately, the plan was scuppered for mundane reasons. “We couldn’t get planning permission,” Boris explained.
