The FE-based project to establish a university in the Highlands and Islands has a new boss, Professor Robert Cormack, the pro-vice-chancellor of Queen’s University in Belfast.

Professor Cormack, who is 54, takes up the pound;87,000 a year post as director of what is now called the University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute on October 1.

Brian Duffield, his predecessor, left the job in a welter of recriminations about staff bullying and policy changes. Professor Cormack, who is a Scot and a graduate of Aberdeen University, described his new position as “a huge professional challenge but one I care passionately about”.

In another career move, Angus Allan 41, assistant principal at Elmwood College in Fife, is to succeed Chris Nixon as principal of Oatridge College in West Lothian.
