Boys do well at clear-cut questions that do not require them to explain themselves, according to an analysis of last year’s national curriculum tests by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authorit. Girls showed better understanding of language features and underlying themes. Boys’ reading scores rose by 14 per cent at key stage 2, but girls still lead by six percentage points.
